Cindy Loos

Artist In Textiles

I love textiles of all kinds, old, new, traditional, innovative, and have been in a creative relationship with them most of my life.  I am inspired by textures and patterns found in nature and seek to reinterpret what I see using fabric formed with my own hand.

I am inspired by the tradition of craft, and love to experiment with new ways to use fabric to tell my story. My work tends to be organic in feeling, although not always soft in color. I work intuitively and abstractly from sketches in my mind, and am inspired from everyday living. A current challenge of mine is to create more pieces that are viewed as social commentary.

Many of my pieces incorporate handwork, which gives my work depth, texture, and detail that I couldn’t get otherwise. The juxtaposition of hard and soft excites me, as well as degradation of line and shape. I cobble, reuse, and reinvent with cloth, which reminds me of traditions of old where early quilters scrapped together out of necessity.

When the viewer sees my work, I want them to relate it to something in their past and enjoy the texture and intimacy of the piece.
